Cancer Wellness is excited to introduce a new online essay series, cW Slice of Life, featuring stories from survivors that are as unique as their cancer diagnoses. With these words submitted from cW readers around the country, we hope you find familiar feelings and words of wisdom, or that they, at the very least, act as evidence for what it means to be part of the cancer community: I am not alone.

Link in bio for Part One of “Tomorrow I’ll Know,” the first of a three-story series by Mandi Chambless. Mandi is a 13.5-year survivor of stage IIIC ovarian cancer. In May 2021, she experienced what she feared was a recurrence. Diagnosed at 28 years old with a 20 percent chance of surviving five years, this fear was not new, but her desire to offer a glimpse into the life of a cancer survivor grew. This three-part series was born in tandem with her panic.

During his 17-year career with the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, catcher Johnny Bench led Cincinnati to two World Series titles and four National League championships. While Bench celebrates his accomplishments, he’s proud to add another to his extensive list: being cancer-free. In 2012, Bench was diagnosed with a non-melanoma skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma (BCC), most likely caused by prolonged UV exposure from many years playing baseball in the blazing sun; his message to others: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

We concern ourselves with the impact of naturally occurring radiation materials in our homes, radiation gases in the air we breathe, and even man-made radiation exposures in medical procedures, but what role does radiation and nuclear exposure play in our daily lives? What impact can it have on our health and well-being? Check out our latest article featuring Dr. Rahul Bhandari at Tampa Bay Radiation Oncology, who talks about how the medical community is progressively understanding the types and amounts of radiation exposure that leads to health detriments, such as cancer.
