This week's #FighterFriday is dedicated to Veronica. At just 18 months old, Veronica was diagnosed with stage III neuroblastoma. After rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she was given a 50/50 chance for survival. Yet, despite her chances, Veronica is a survivor and now, at age 39, she is a mother of two kids of her own. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Reflecting on her experience, Veronica created a 100-page autobiography and family cookbook. Last summer, Veronica returned to her hometown of Omaha to donate copies of her book to the Omaha Children's Hospital & Medical Center and one to the family of the oncologist who saved her life. Unfortunately, her childhood oncologist passed away from kidney cancer in 2015.⁠⠀

“I'm thankful for being alive and being strong enough, even as a baby at 18 months, to fight such a horrible disease,” Veronica says about her experience. “Many babies and children my age lost their fight and it still, to this day, breaks my heart. I'm thankful I'm healthy now with one kidney, two beautiful healthy kiddos and an amazing, supportive husband.”

Meet Sydney (@sydneykayte), our latest essayist at CancerWellness.com and today's #FighterFriday. At 23 years old, Sydney was on the cusp of young adult life when she received unexpected news: she had breast cancer. But Sydney says she never saw it as being the end of her story—only a continuation.⁠⠀

In fact, Sydney says many aspects of her life became richer because of her experience. "This other soul surfaced from within and taught me about gratitude, life, well-being and so much more," she says. "It has opened my heart to a greater love, a love for another day where I get to jump out of bed in the morning. I am not sure how to explain it, but colors are brighter and waves crash harder. Maybe it is because my soul has awoken."⁠⠀

Lizzie Carr’s adult life, like many people her age, was just about to take off. After studying English literature at university, @lizzie_outside went on to work in marketing for an agency. All of that came to an abrupt halt when she noticed a small lump on her throat. And while it didn’t hurt and she showed no other symptoms, Lizzie remained concerned. After a lengthy testing process, she finally received the news: she had cancer.⁠

Still, despite the life-altering shifts she faced in her diagnosis, Lizzie says one shift was especially positive: her turn toward environmentalism. Childhood cancer research lags far behind research

Childhood cancer research lags far behind research into adult treatments, but the risk of negative health effects later in life demands these cancers get the same support—and federal dollars. Despite being the number one cause of death by disease among children, only 4 percent of federal cancer research dollars goes directly toward treating childhood cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, about 11,050 children (under age 15) in the United States alone will be diagnosed with cancer in 2020. ⁠

So much of the discussion around cancer involves fighting the disease, that there's little room for discussion about what comes next: the survivorship. We could really relate to this quote from our issue 6 story on @lizzie_outside about what comes after. You know, after the chemotherapy, after the hospital stays, after the surgery. Survivorship is much more complicated than most of us could imagine and the ramifications of cancer treatment linger long after one has completed their course. ⁠

One of the most daunting challenges a cancer warrior faces is paying for what are often very expensive medications. Medicare and Medicaid plans include prescription drug coverage, and the Affordable Care Act mandates that most private insurance plans also provide prescription drug benefits. However, insurance policies with prescription drug coverage have a list of approved medications called a “formulary,” greatly affecting the cost and approval of an individual prescription.⁠

However, with the right tools and information, accessing the right prescription medication for your cancer diagnosis doesn’t have to be complicated. Meet Pina Ferraro, today’s #FighterFriday. Pina, an 18-year breast cancer survivor, says one of the key things she has learned from survivorship is how to manage feeling like she lives two separate lives. ⁠
⁠
“You live one part of your life fooling those around you, making them believe you are okay and managing just fine,” she says. “Then, there is the other part of your life where you quietly scream and fall apart, the part when the mask you wear comes off and you are at your most vulnerable self.” ⁠
⁠
Pina says the fear that engulfed her every day was a reminder that she was not ready to give in or give up. Recently celebrating her cancerversary, Pina had this to say to her cancer: “I look in the mirror and see [...] the scar you left behind to replace [what] you took. With pride, I see the woman I have become, the woman you created: stronger, more determined, loving and committed. The journey was painful and devastating, dealing with accepting what you wanted me to become. We fought, you knocked me down, and eventually I got up and won. What was supposed to kill me in fact gave me life.” ⁠

This year, Pina celebrates her survivorship and her life as “a woman who is forever grateful, clothed in strength and dignity, love and beauty. A woman who will continue to believe in the life she is meant to live.”⁠
